It may seem obvious that going on holiday will of course reduce energy usage in your home, but checking that you have ticked these off before you leave will help reduce the most energy you can whilst you’re away.

Turn Everything Off That You Don’t Need On

There are some electrical appliances which need to stay on no matter if you’re at home or not, which include your fridge and freezer. However, some appliances don’t need to be left on or on standby. Leaving items on standby can still use energy, so take care that any appliances that don’t need to be left on are switched off and taken out of the plug socket, ensuring no energy is wasted. This could include your kettle or television.

Another electrical item you may want to switch off is your Wi-Fi router. Although this doesn’t use a large amount of electricity, if you’re going away for a few weeks and it won’t be used, it may be a good idea to switch it off in the meantime.

Turn Off Lights

Avoid those unexpected energy costs by making sure you switch off your lights before leaving. For security reasons, you may want to keep a light on. If you’re tech savvy and have smart lighting installed in your home, you can control the lighting using an energy saving app on your phone. This will allow you to switch the lights on only when it’s dark and perhaps only for a couple of hours – it’s for you to control!

Timer Switchers

Alternatively, if you don’t have access to controlling your electricity and lighting using your mobile, there are timer switches you can use to plug into your sockets. These can help cut the cost of your energy bills as you can set a timer as to when you want the lights to turn on and off. Another tip to reduce energy usage on your lighting is switching to LED bulbs.

Close Windows And Doors

To avoid any draughts and ensure security in your home is optimal, be sure to check all windows and doors are closed.

Prepare For Home Return

As previously mentioned, today you can use your mobile phones to control the heating and lighting in your home. If you wish to arrive home in a warm house, you will be able to switch the heating on from an app on your phone. Speak to your energy provider to discuss whether this option is available for your electric and heating system.
